Saint Augustine Cathedral

Saint Augustine Cathedral

The city of St. Augustine was founded and established in 1565 by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. And the Catholic Cathedral is the oldest congregation of any denomination in the United States. This Congregation dates all the way back from September 8, 1565.

The Cathedral itself was built back in 1797.

One important fact to mention is that in 1976 it was designated a Basilica by Papal Proclamation due to its historical significance.

Talking a little bit about its arquitecture we can say that upon entering the cathedral, a visitor would pass under a circular arch, which is a direct architectural feature of the Classical period, and true to Classical style, one each side of the arch.

This amazing structure was burned back on 1887 but the damage was not total and reconstruction was started through donations from Henry Flagler and funds from the congregation.
